DPF Diagnostics & Regeneration in Birmingham

A blocked diesel particulate filter is a symptom, not a diagnosis. We measure what is actually in the filter, find why it clogged, and fix the cause — not just the light.

The diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust and periodically burns it off in a process called regeneration. When regenerations keep failing — usually because of short journeys, interrupted trips or an underlying engine fault — soot builds until the DPF warning light appears, and eventually the car limits its own power to protect the filter.

Our DPF diagnostics measures what guesswork cannot: calculated and actual soot loading, ash accumulation, exhaust back-pressure, and the health of the differential pressure sensor, temperature sensors and glow plug system the regen depends on. Only with those numbers can anyone honestly tell you whether a regeneration will work, or whether the filter is at the end of its life.

The service is mobile across Birmingham — important, because a car in limp mode should not be driven around the M42 looking for a garage. We come to you in Solihull, Dudley and everywhere between.

What's included in dpf diagnostics & regeneration

Soot and ash loading readings

Both the ECU's calculated soot figure and the measured value from back-pressure, plus ash loading — the number that decides if a filter can be saved.

Differential pressure testing

The pressure difference across the filter at idle and under load, tested against specification and cross-checked at the sensor itself.

Regen system checks

Glow plugs, exhaust temperature sensors, thermostat operation and fuel vaporiser (where fitted) — everything a regeneration needs to succeed.

Forced regeneration

Where soot loading and conditions allow, a controlled regeneration carried out with live temperature and pressure monitoring throughout.

Root-cause report

Why the filter blocked in the first place — driving pattern, a failed sensor, a sticking EGR or a thermostat running cool — so it does not simply block again.

Honest end-of-life verdict

If the filter is ash-full or melted internally, we say so plainly and explain the options, rather than selling a regen that cannot work.

Why DPFs block in Birmingham traffic

Regeneration needs sustained exhaust temperature, which means sustained driving — typically 15-20 minutes at steady motorway or dual-carriageway speed. A diesel doing school runs and ring-road hops around the Bullring rarely gets there, and every interrupted regen leaves the soot for next time. Add winter temperatures and a thermostat that is opening early, and the filter never stands a chance.

The other half of the story is that a struggling engine loads the filter faster. A split boost hose, a tired injector or a coked EGR valve all produce extra soot or lower exhaust temperatures. That is why clearing the filter without finding the cause only buys a few weeks — the blockage returns, and each forced regen on a sick engine does the filter no favours.

Soot versus ash — the distinction that decides everything

Soot is burnable; ash is not. Ash is the residue of engine oil additives and accumulates slowly over the filter's whole life. A young filter can be 90% soot-loaded and recover completely with a successful regeneration, while an older filter can be mostly ash — physically full of material no regen can remove.

Diagnostic equipment reports both figures, which is why a proper diesel diagnostics session always checks ash loading before anyone talks about regeneration, cleaning or replacement. Anyone offering to 'fix' a DPF without those two numbers is guessing with your money.

How dpf diagnostics & regeneration works

  1. Describe the symptoms

DPF light, limp mode, fan running on after switch-off, rising oil level — tell us what you have noticed and how the car is used day to day.

  2. Measure the filter

Soot and ash loading, back-pressure and sensor readings taken live, with the engine at full temperature.

  3. Find the root cause

The regen system and engine health checked so the blockage is explained, not just observed.

  4. Regenerate or advise

If the numbers allow, a monitored forced regeneration; if not, an honest verdict and the options in order of cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clear a DPF warning light by driving on the motorway?

Sometimes, if the light has only just appeared and the car still allows active regeneration: 15-20 minutes at a steady 60-70mph in a lower-than-top gear gives the exhaust the temperature it needs. If the car is in limp mode, the light is red, or it has been on for weeks, motorway driving will not fix it and the filter needs measuring first.

What is a forced regeneration and is it safe?

A forced regeneration is triggered by diagnostic equipment while the car is stationary, raising exhaust temperature under controlled, monitored conditions to burn off soot. It is safe when soot loading is within limits and the regen system is healthy — which is why we measure and test first rather than forcing a regen blind.

Why does my DPF keep blocking after it was regenerated?

Because regeneration treats the blockage, not its cause. Usual root causes are short-journey driving patterns, a faulty differential pressure or temperature sensor giving false readings, a thermostat running cool, glow plug faults, or an engine producing excess soot from a boost leak or injector problem. Our diagnosis identifies which one you have.

How do I know if my DPF needs replacing instead?

Ash loading is the deciding figure. Ash cannot be burned off, so a filter near its ash capacity will block again quickly no matter how it is regenerated, and internal melting from a past overheat shows up as abnormal back-pressure. The diagnostic readings make the call — we show you the numbers and explain them.

Is it illegal to remove a DPF?

Yes. Removing or tampering with a DPF on a road car is an MOT failure and an offence, and a car with a removed filter will fail on visible inspection and emissions behaviour. Anyone offering removal is offering you a car that cannot legally pass its next test — we diagnose and repair filters, we never remove them.

Can a faulty sensor make the DPF light come on?

Yes — the ECU judges filter loading largely from the differential pressure sensor, so a split sensor hose or a drifting sensor can report a blocked filter that is actually fine, or trigger constant regeneration attempts. Testing the sensor against a manual pressure gauge is part of the diagnosis before any filter work is recommended.

My oil level keeps rising. Is that connected to the DPF?

It often is. Interrupted regenerations inject extra fuel, some of which ends up diluting the engine oil, and the level climbs while oil quality falls. It is a recognised sign of repeated failed regens, and the oil and filter should be changed once the cause is fixed — diluted oil protects the engine poorly.

Do you offer mobile DPF diagnostics in my area?

Yes, across Birmingham and the West Midlands — particularly useful if the car is in limp mode and should not be driven far. We cover Solihull, Walsall, Dudley and all Birmingham districts, 24 hours a day.
