Warning Light Diagnostics in Birmingham

Beyond the engine light: we diagnose ABS, airbag, traction control, charging, oil, steering and tyre pressure warnings — and prove what set them.

The engine management light gets the attention, but a modern dashboard carries twenty or more warning lights, each looked after by its own control system. When one lights up, the relevant system has either detected a fault or disabled itself for safety — and knowing which, and why, takes a scan of that specific system, not just the engine.

Our warning light diagnostics covers the full cluster: ABS and traction control, airbag (SRS), battery and charging, oil pressure, electric power steering, tyre pressure monitoring and brake system warnings. We read the system that owns the light, test the components it points to, and explain the result in plain English.

It is a mobile service across Birmingham, from Hall Green to West Bromwich. If you are not sure what a symbol means in the first place, our illustrated guide to dashboard warning lights and their meanings is a good place to start.

What's included in warning light diagnostics

ABS and traction control

Wheel speed sensors, reluctor rings, ABS pumps and modules tested to find why the system has switched itself off.

Airbag (SRS) systems

Seat occupancy sensors, belt pretensioners, clocksprings and crash sensors — diagnosed with the safety precautions these systems demand.

Battery and charging lights

Alternator output, smart-charge control and battery condition tested under load — see also our electrical diagnostics.

Oil pressure warnings

Actual oil pressure measured against specification to separate a faulty pressure switch from a genuine lubrication problem.

Electric power steering

Torque sensors, steering angle calibration and motor faults behind heavy steering and EPS warning lights.

TPMS and brake warnings

Tyre pressure sensors with dead batteries, brake fluid level and pad wear circuits, and handbrake switch faults.

When a warning light means the system has switched off

Several safety systems disable themselves the moment they detect a fault they cannot work around. An ABS light usually means the brakes still work normally as brakes — but the anti-lock function, and often traction and stability control with it, is off. An airbag light means some or all of the restraint system may not deploy in a crash. Those are very different risk pictures from an engine light, and they are why warning lights on safety systems deserve prompt attention.

It is also worth knowing that several of these are MOT failures in their own right: ABS, airbag, EPS and TPMS warnings are all checked as part of the test. Getting the system diagnosed and repaired before test day is far less stressful than a fail sheet.

The wheel speed sensor epidemic

If one component accounts for more warning lights than any other on Birmingham's roads, it is the humble wheel speed sensor. Living inches from the road, it endures water, salt, grit and heat cycles until its signal degrades — and because the ABS, traction control, stability control, TPMS (on indirect systems) and even the speedometer all feed from the same signals, one tired sensor can light the dash up like a Christmas tree.

The trap is that the fault code names the corner, not the culprit: sensor, corroded connector, damaged reluctor ring and chafed wiring all produce the same code. Testing the signal at the sensor and at the module is what separates a £ sensor swap from an expensive module guess.

How warning light diagnostics works

  1. Tell us which light

A photo of the dashboard helps — WhatsApp it over with your car details and when the light appeared.

  2. System-specific scan

We scan the system that owns the light — ABS, SRS, EPS, TPMS — not just the engine ECU.

  3. Component-level tests

Signals, powers, grounds and resistances tested to prove the failing part or wire.

  4. Safety verdict

What the light means for driving the car today, and what repair restores the system properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

Your ordinary braking still works, but the anti-lock function is disabled, so in an emergency stop the wheels can lock and steering control can be lost. Drive with extra care and distance, especially in the wet, and get it checked promptly — it is also an MOT failure.

What does it mean when the airbag light stays on?

The restraint system has detected a fault and may not deploy correctly in a collision. Common causes include seat occupancy sensors, connectors under the seats disturbed by cleaning or seat movement, and the steering wheel clockspring. Because it concerns crash safety, it should be diagnosed rather than ignored.

Why does my battery light come on while driving?

The charging system is not keeping up — usually the alternator, its drive belt, or the smart-charge control between them. The car is running on battery alone and will eventually stop when voltage falls too low, so this light deserves same-day attention rather than a wait-and-see approach.

Can low tyre pressure set off other warning lights?

On cars with indirect TPMS, yes — the system infers pressure from wheel speed differences, so a deflating tyre can also upset traction and stability warnings. Even on direct systems, always check pressures first: it is the one cause you can confirm or rule out in two minutes at a petrol station.

Three lights came on at once. Is everything broken?

Usually not. Many systems share sensors and data, so one fault — a wheel speed sensor is the classic — can cascade warnings across ABS, traction, stability and tyre pressure together. A full-system scan shows which system holds the primary fault and which are simply reacting to it.

Will a warning light fail the MOT?

Several will: ABS, airbag, electronic power steering, TPMS and brake fluid warnings are all MOT fail items when illuminated. The engine management light is too. Getting the diagnosis done a few weeks before the test leaves time to repair without the pressure of an expired ticket.

The light went off by itself — do I still need a check?

The fault code stays stored even after the light goes out, along with the conditions recorded when it set. Intermittent faults — corroding connectors, sensors on their way out — commonly flicker like this before failing permanently, so a scan while the car behaves is a good investment.

Can you diagnose warning lights at my home?

Yes. Warning light diagnosis needs the diagnostic equipment, test gear and the car — all of which travel with us. We cover Birmingham and the West Midlands at homes and workplaces, 24 hours a day, and safety-system lights are treated as a priority booking.
